Coffee numbers

January 30, 2017 Jonathan Burkholder

Our pickers must hand-pick approximately 275 ripe cherries to make a pound.  Because of all the processing & drying, approximately 8 lbs of ripe cherries equal 1 lb of roasted beans, so it takes about 2,200 ripe cherries to make one pound of exportable coffee, or 50 cherries to make a cup of coffee.  There are normally 2 beans per cherry, although some have 3 beans.
